Amethyst comes from the quartz family and can range in colour from pale to deep purple. You can also find heat-treated versions that are green (prasiolite) and yellow (so-called ‘citrine’). The word amethyst comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning ‘not drunken’, referring to its traditional use as a stone to prevent overindulgence and inebriation. It is a powerful crystal, used to protect and purify both the physical and spiritual body, as well as cleansing the energy surrounding the body or any room it is placed in. Strongly related to the third eye, the seat of intuition, it is also used heavily by travellers to assist with safety. Other issues amethyst is used for include transforming negativity or assisting with insomnia and dreams, making this a significantly beneficial all-purpose stone.
